Whether you are a metalhead or not, the name Iron Maiden has most likely reached your ears at one point or another. This pillar of Heavy Metal still gathers thousands of people during international tours today, continuing to offer an intergenerational audience a show worthy of its reputation after 50 years of existence. But what is it that makes Iron Maiden such a unique band?
! Warning: possible spoilers ahead for the less knowledgeable readers !
On May 13th, 2026, the band released Burning Ambition, a documentary retracing the group’s history and presenting both familiar and previously unseen footage to tell the story of their journey across the past five decades. From London pubs to the biggest arenas in Europe, the band managed to adapt -sometimes through line-up changes, sometimes through shifts in direction- to offer the very best of Iron Maiden. And perhaps that is what matters most in the end: humans who did everything they could to keep alive a band that would go on to revolutionize the music world.
Directed by Malcolm Venville and produced by Dominic Freeman, the documentary features sequences intertwined with interviews from fans and celebrities such as Lars Ulrich (Metallica), Tom Morello and Ian Scott (Anthrax), all reflecting on the band’s early years and its evolution over time. It also includes appearances from Steve Harris, Bruce Dickinson, Adrian Smith, Dave Murray, Janick Gers, Nicko McBrain and their manager Rod Smallwood, allowing them to drop the mask and share their raw emotions.
The documentary dives into the music, the revolutions, the political and fan-driven commitments, but also into a concept that was ahead of its time: Eddie. A skeleton born not to represent the band itself, but its message and passion. A mascot that would go on to open a whole new era for graphic imagery in music. Even present on stage, Iron Maiden knew exactly how to turn Eddie into one of Heavy Metal’s most iconic figures.
But this documentary does not simply retrace their journey, the satanic accusations or the contracts signed along the way; it tells the story of how human beings experienced it all, how they survived such a meteoric rise, the doubts, the exhaustion of endless touring, the burnout, the conflicts within the band itself… And how the fans gave them the strength to keep going.
Recently announced as inductees into the Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Fame, Rod Smallwood had the opportunity to thank the recognition of the band’s hard work and revolutionary impact, while also stating that: “For Iron Maiden, the relationship with our fans has always come before everything else, including awards and industry recognition.”

The emotional core of the documentary lies at the heart of its storytelling, reflecting Iron Maiden’s greatness of spirit; creating music for themselves, but playing it for the rest of the world. This connection with their community was built over the years, through encounters, concerts and shared experiences. But if the fans are still here today, it is undoubtedly because the band has always shown that Iron Maiden was never meant to have an ending.
Through Nicko McBrain’s departure, fans realized that the band would not stay on stage forever, but they also understood that Iron Maiden would always do everything in its power to remain on the road for as long as possible and that the band has left such a mark on history that even without concerts, its legacy will endure and continue inspiring future generations.
But this is not the end of the road for Iron Maiden just yet, and the band will return to France this June for three dates as promising as they are nostalgic:
June 19th, 2026 - Clisson / Hellfest
June 22nd, 2026 - Paris / Paris La Défense Arena
June 28th, 2026 - Lyon-Décines / Groupama Stadium
When Steve Harris decided to found Iron Maiden, he did not simply create a band, but a legend, a story as epic as it is inspiring, where every word sounds like a rallying cry and a reminder that fighting for the greatest reason to live is an experience unlike any other.
